School holidays in Germany vary from one Land (region) to another, as the organization of holidays falls under the responsibility of the federal states (Länder). Germany is divided into 16 Länder, grouped into five clusters that are often geographically close. Frankfurt am Main, located in the state of Hesse, belongs to the Central group along with Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Each year, the dates for the summer holidays (Sommerferien) are scheduled on a rotating basis to avoid traffic congestion and overloading of transport and tourism infrastructure. The summer holiday calendar is set several years in advance by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education (Kulturministerkonferenz – KMK).
For other school breaks (autumn, winter, Easter), each Land sets its own dates based on local customs or regional economic needs, such as the tourist seasons or agricultural production periods.
In the files below, you’ll find both the summer holiday dates from 2025 to 2030 and the school holiday calendar for the 2024–2025 academic year.
